We were cutting bad caulk out of the stairs on the south west side of the Kimball Tower(because it was leaking into the basement). It was not a very exciting day again, but there was a promise of an exciting project on the horizon! More details to come.

Day 2: We prepared for the aforementioned project, working on the roof of the Maeser Building! The only problem was that it rained... and we got a call for an emergency leak in the basement of the Kimball Tower. (fortunately not the area we were working on!) It was a lot of investigatory work. Good to learn how to do that!

Day 3: Another day of investigating and working hard to fix the problems in Kimball Tower. Before the work, we got to check out some contractor work! One thing we got to see was the new broadcasting building! It is going to be Awesome!!!! Also, we got to go on top of the Marriott Center!! They are re-doing the roof, so we had to check it out! it was Awesome!!!!

The rest of the week I was off, because Carry left for the weekend... so I got a long weekend!!!

I really enjoyed the week... it was full of cool experiences and a good chance to pick someone's brain about their job rather than just leaning from 5 different people...

Ryan the Intern (Week 2)

Well, here we are at week 2 already, it seems like the time will fly doing this interning business.

This week I was on the rotation to spend time with the BYU Grounds department! (yeah, I know it sounds like a lot of weeding and mowing lawns... but it was more fun than that!)

Day 1: I had to wake up early, (6 am) in order to be there in time for the crew I was working with... kinda sad. I worked with the on-campus shrub pruning crew. I spent the first two hours with the foreman on the crew just giving me an orientation. Then we had to go help pull tarps at the softball field because it was raining.... (I really enjoyed that and now I have been on 3 of the major playing fields on campus, baseball football and basketball.) Then I spent a while pruning around the Eyring Science Center.

Day 2: Tuesday I worked with the Landscape Development crew on campus. They are currently building a new "water feature" south of campus on the hill where the nature walk trail used to be. It is basically a man-made stream. We got to work with a guy who drives a front loader, and we helped position the rocks below the Grant building, we did the west end of the area, and I was able to use a dirt compactor... (like a big powered pogo stick with a big foot on it.) It was hard work, but it should last for a while and I can say that I helped create it.

Day 3: Wednesday I was able to work with the Arborist and his crew, which was fun! There was a dead tree on the North end of the Morris Center. The tree was really close to the building, so we had to pull it down away from the building. Two people had to climb up the tree and cut down the branches hanging over the building. At the end we tied a rope around one of the thick trunks and pulled while one guy cut down the main part of the trunk with a chain saw. I felt pretty accomplished at the end of the day.

Day 4: Thursday I was back on the shrub pruning crew, (fortunately a different crew which started at 8). We pruned at the MTC, which was fun! I had good memories of the Mission :D (For those of you who have been to the MTC we were working at building 4, the Woodruff Building, which is the main one with the cafeteria).

Day 5: Friday I worked with the grounds crew that take care of Heritage Halls (where I lived as a freshman...) I just did some edging and used a weed whacker. Nothing too exciting... but every day doesn't have to be exciting.

Well, was a good week, it was interesting to work in the rain outdoors, but totally worth it! I had some awesome experiences through the week!

Ryan the Intern (Week 1)

so, I am doing an internship, and because I want to remember what I have done, I decided to chronicle some of my more awesome comings and goings from each week.

So, in week 1, I worked with the Mechanical shop at BYU campus.

Day 1: didn't seem promising for the beginning of my internship, I spent most of the morning working in the shop with the other students, filing down some pieces that would be used to help construct bathroom stalls... it was a pretty bad way to start off the internship.

Day 2: Fortunately today was better for my internship, I was able to see more of the things that the Mechanical Shop does. We worked in the Clark Building putting in a new HVAC system (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) in the Kennedy International Studies entry lobby, we got up the section of ducting that connected into the rest of the building's system. More to come on this project later.

Day 3: Today I got to spend the morning with the plumbers, who are also part of the mechanical shop. We unclogged a sink in the girl's bathroom of the McDonald building (the one on campus, south of the MARB). After that, I went back to the Clark bldg. where we put up the center piece of the HVAC system.

Day 4: Thursday, we put the insulation on the system to keep it from having any problems, nothing else too special.

Day 5: The last day of my first week! I spent the day with the plumbers again, this time we were working on a retro-fit for the Fletcher building. I got to hang some pipe, use a hammer drill, and drive a BYU truck! (it was awesome!) The other cool thing I was able to do was work in the MTC testing some valves... which was fun to go back after so long.
We took a break at the CONE and I was able to see Whitney! I hadn't seen her in a while... it was fun!

So, my first week was not too bad! I learned a lot and was able to have some cool experiences! (only 7 more weeks to go!)

Business Socks

So, I wore my black socks with my gym shorts (like I do sometimes on sunday...because it's comfortable).
I wore it to ward prayer, and made an announcement.

Everyone Judged Me.
I'm sad.

My Childhood

So, I totally put this on my Facebook, but I really felt like elaborating here.

With the help of my good friend Jon, I was able to download Zelda: The Ocarina of Time on my Wii.
Ok, this game was probably the favorite one of my entire youth. I remember playing this and FFX late into the night, probably one of my favorite video gaming memories was one night at about 2 AM I was in the basement running through the Gerudo Desert while listening to Desert Rose by Sting on the radio (the sound was off on the TV so as not to disturb anyone). I was probably between 10 and 16. Now anytime I hear that song I think of that dark basement and that night playing that game.

kinda weird, but I spent my days being social and my nights being a nerd.

The beat of my slowly failing heart

so,
over the last few weeks, the only thing that keeps me sane is the constant knowledge that I will be able to play about 6 hours of rockband per week...
this is sad you say?
well, I'd rather play rock band twice a week and be sane than the alternative.
you say that you are insane to play that much rockband?

no, my friend, YOU are the one that is insane for thinking that.

Blessings

With my aunt in the hospital after her surgery, I have been really thinking about how blessed I am and thanking Heavenly Father for the blessings that I have. Still last week, I had a dream about Peter Pan, (without the flying sadly) and a mix of the sci fi genre (a city of ember feel, but before I saw the movie) and a mob flick (mostly drug related).

anyway, yeah, my dreams have been weird recently.

fin.

What is wrong with me?!?

I can't figure it out . . . maybe I am getting sick, but the past week, I have been getting more sleep than normal, and I am still Horribly tired and sleepy.
I have fallen asleep more this week in class and while watching TV than I even did when I was working two jobs and 10-14 hours a day.

There has got to be something wrong with that, and although I can blame a little bit of it on the daylight savings time change, I have never had this magnitude of a problem with daylight savings time before. . .

maybe I am mutating into a superhero. . . that would be pretty sweet!

People are like Demetors.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times; I thought, "Self, what is a dementor?" and of course the obvious answer: a soul sucker! (yes that is not completely true . . . but true enough for my metaphor). So how do souls sucking harbingers of darkness factor into my aquainting people this year? now we shall weave these many thought strands together into a chord of pure awesomeness!!!

People are like Dementors, there are certain people in the world who just suck something out of you; something that you do not want to give up . . .

Examples!

1. I play in the band at BYU, and one of my directors is a Dementor of Fun. (not Bro. Mac) I don't know how she does it . . . but seriously, she can make anything become un-fun.

2. I have another band director (still not Bro. Mac) who is a Dementor of Energy, after a little while in there I don't want to do anything; it's sad, because I like music.

3. My Grandpa was a Dementor of Doubt, every time that I would be in a situation where I felt unsure of the direction my life was heading in, he would be there to assure me I was on the right path or help steer me in a more suitable direction.

Just a few thoughts, but for all you Harry Potter fans . . . Dementors are REAL!

fin.

I am Antsy...

I really really really want to perform on my guitar, I don't know why but for the last 2 weeks I have wanted to play and sing in front of an audience... i have found like 4 songs that I just want to get a drummer and a bass player and just have at it... that is what is so frustrating about school... it keeps me from doing cool and fun things like that.
speaking of cool and fun things... type='text'>I dreamed a dream

So, Sunday I woke up with a song in my head (which is not odd because I usually wake up with a song in my head... or in my heart... or both) this experience was different though, because although I had a song in my head, it was one that I had never heard before... and it was only 2 lines long.
So, I spent the first hour of my sabbath recording the miraculous manifestation of musical mastery that I dreamed up. It wasn't half bad when I finished... but I felt like something was amiss...

As I got into the shower (one of my more contemplative places in the world) I was still molested by the thought that I might not have had an original song... when right before I finished I realized where I had gotten part of the song... it was not a direct copy, but you can definitely see the influence (it is all in the verse, the part that I didn't dream up, so I don't feel so bad).

anyway, I was/am quite pleased with myself and the results.

that is all.

<img width='1' (my parents gave me money, so I got exactly what I wanted from them... I bought it all myself!!!) the two that pop out the most in my mind are the ones that I see the most often: my new suspenders, and my new guitar stand.

Natalia gave me some freakin' sweet suspenders, which were worn at church today, and I must say make me look totally awesome! as evidenced by this picture:

Then, to make things even crazier her and Heather got me a new guitar stand (capable of holding 2 guitars at a time!!!) which is now in my room displaying both of my electric beauties. This present has helped me to get back into playing my bass, now that it is readily accessible, I am more willing to pull it out and lay down some hot grooves (the 2 that I know (yes, Lowrider is one of them!)... I am still working on learning more, but it is hard to play the bass without backing something else up, and I don't have a band to play in right now, so I run a little short on bass playing inspiration).

as far as purchased friends go, that would be my guitars... and I am now trying to increase my collection with a few new guitars: imagine Jack Black (in School of Rock) playing on his sweet guitar (a Gibson SG Special in a deep cherry red if I am not mistaken)... then think of a cheap imitation of that guitar... yeah, that is what I want. Then imagine Kyle Gas (the other dude from Tenacious D) and the acoustic guitar that he plays on the music video of "Tribute" (by said Tenacious D) now change that guitar to an acoustic electric and then change the color from brown to a black and that is most likely the other guitar that I am interested in right now... (and yes, that would put my total up to 6 including the Ukulele and the Bass... I am obsessed and will admit it, on the grounds of brooklyn). They are still in the works, as school has drained me of financial resources... but soon the government will give me back some of my tax money...(because I overpaid them like I always do...) and then... they will be MINE!!!! (insert mad scientist laughing here________.) (ok, that's more than enough.)

So, not to leave anyone else out, thanks to everyone who helped make my birthday cool!

I love you all! I have been wanting to do this for a long time, but I have never been able to justify the time during the semester for doing it, so now I am obligated to get it done! I am probably a little more excited about this than I should be; but hey for the first time in a while I am excited about homework! (all my roomates left earlier and I had to get some last minute stuff taken care of) but still about 10 minutes early; and went to the chapel to see how the sacrament was coming. Casey (my roomate) was preparing the sacrament all by himself so I decided to give him a hand (out of the goodness of my heart of course). We finished, but there was one little problem that we had not foreseen... because of the long break, noone was asked to bring the bread! With 5 mintues until the meeting started we had quite the problem... walked over and talked to the bishopric and we conferenced about the problem we now faced.
We decided that the most prudent avenue to persue was sending the second counselor to go get the bread while the bishop pressed forward with the meeting (in hopes that he would be back in time). Well we felt confident that he would be back in plenty of time to have sacrament meeting run smoothly.
As the minutes passed, the pressure built (for me at least) as I waited for the bread to turn up, sitting up there with the whole ward oblivious to our predicament. The Bishop got up and announced the sacrament hymn, and nothing had changed... still no bread. Casey and I looked at each other and decided that we could finally sing the sacrament hymn; so as the first strains of the hymn permeated the chapel we remained in our seats and sang with the rest of the congregation.
By the time the second verse started, people in the congregation had begun to notice that we were not performing the normal priesthood duties associated with the sacrament; then the confused looks started... I leaned over and whispered to Casey that the whole ward was looking at us funny for just sitting there, we both chuckled and went back to singing.
As the third verse began, the side door to the chapel open and calmly walking in was the second counselor with the sacrament bread.
With reckless abandon we tore into the plastic packaging and began feverishly to break the bread, by the end of the third verse we were halfway finished, and then the fourth verse began and we were feeling pretty confident until tragedy struck! Seems that we were working at such a feverish pace that Casey accidentally dropped half a piece of bread on the ground!!! OH THE HORROR!!!! He quickly picked it up and took it to the trash while I finished up the last of his tray with a fresh piece of bread, the last strains of the hymn echoed through the sacred hall the last pieces of bread were placed on the tray and Casey and I sat down triumphant!
Never before has such drama and suspense been witnessed in a meeting such as that! I was once again a participant in history!!!

Rock Band

So, I have decided that I am going to make a much better name for myself as a Rock Band musician than I would as a real one due to the magnitude of time that I spend with it.
This disparaging difference is what is the real evidence of this within the context of me practicing/recording songs on the real guitar such that it will take many years to finish my project of recording my CD.

I am not really that disappointed though, it is not like I am staking my future on a record deal or something... wait, crap!?!?! ... and enjoy the self produced animation :D)

This is the epic story of two people locked in the eternal struggle between who pays for the gas at the gas station.

It all started this evening after a long day of working in the Graingers, I went to pick up some friends from the airport. Of course, being really nice they both offered to play for gas (in different ways) but since I also went to see my grandma it was under my own prerogative that I went, I was not spending any extra gas for travel.

Now for the main event:

My car was devoid of gasoline after many trips to and from Provo over the holiday, so as I returned to the apartment complex and lugged the girls' luggage to their third floor apartment, I headed off toward the Chevron so that I could replenish my low stores of petroleum.

Natalia was kind enough to agree to accompany me to the gas station, and as we pulled into the station she asked for my wallet... a strange request in my opinion, but soon I understood her intentions.

She grabbed my arm as I reached for my wallet, which I was still able to extract from my pocket with the other but then she wouldn't let me leave the car... after a short struggle, I freed myself from her grip and the car. I thought that this would be the end of the struggle, but I was wrong... dead wrong.

As I started toward the pump with my debit card in hand, I was blindsided by the flying fury of Natalia as she began the epic struggle for the credit card swiper. I blocked her with the car and my body but she fought for the high ground, but I maintained my position and closed in on the prized swiping machine. She grabbed me around the middle and at every lunge I attempted she countered with a ferocious tug, but finally I achieved my goal! the card was in!!!

But to my dismay as I pulled the card from it's electronic sheath the screen showed a bright blow to my cause: the card had not read... (dun dun daaaaaah!!!)

As Natalia gloated in her momentary victory, I began to improve my defenses while still accomplishing my task. I began the second assault on the machine with fervor while applying my skills acquired from years of basketball to keep Natalia from victory.

The second attempt was more quickly successful, I was even able to cancel the request for a car wash, but as I reached for the nozzle, Natalia quick as a cat hit the cancel button.

Once again, the seemingly eternal struggle for the pump began for the third round, ('ding' FIGHT!) By this time I was beginning to develop a system that seemed to work quite well, quickly I began to slide the card into the victory slot. I also quickly got the car wash button, and began to work towards the nozzle... this time she pushed the call cashier for assistance button! (by this time the lady in the white car behind us was probably watching with concern). Thusly I was able to get the nozzle off and start making stabs at the button to choose my level of ethanol... unfortunately her second desperate bid to stop the transaction was successful.

Well the next and final attempt was even more heatedly contested, I finally triumphed in all aspects of the contest!!!

As the title states it was a battle of epic proportions!!!

And I TRIUMPHED!!!

This was a legendary battle! the stuff of legend...

and there is no charge for awesomeness!!!

My Memory

I have been really frusterated with myself recently over a lack of memory.
I got an itunes gift card for christmas and I am making mental notes of songs that I want to get... the only problem is that any time I get in front of my computer I can never remember any of the songs that I decided I would buy...
